Situation
Service members transitioning from military to civilian life often have difficulty finding meaningful employment. Men and women who have served in the military have learned invaluable hard and soft skills, leadership, and a profound work ethic. But civilian employers don’t always understand the value of the skills, training, and experience that military service provides. Veterans needed help translating their skills and marketing themselves to potential employers.
Created to combat increasing veteran unemployment, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes program found that one of the main problems was the gap in communication and understanding between veterans and civilian hiring managers. But USCOC lacked a platform to bring the two audiences together. They partnered with us to create a suite of tools that would close the gap.
Solution
The key to connecting employers with veteran talent was making it simple for former servicewomen and men to show prospective employers how their military skillset translates to the private sector.
First, we created the Resume Engine, a free, secure, online tool that walks veterans through the process of building an effective resume. Over a 5-month period, iostudio built detailed wireframes and designed a user-friendly process. The iostudio team also created the heart of the Resume Engine, a sophisticated translator that provides civilian-focused definitions for military careers, understandable by both HR employees and automated computer systems. Resume Engine also provides expert advice for writing cover letters, negotiating offers, and more.
Next, we built Virtual Job Scout, a digital real-time job fair that directly connects employers and job seekers. We went on to build Career Spark, a separate platform to help military spouses find employment, and the Employer Roadmap, a comprehensive digital resource where employers can learn how to recruit and hire veterans and military spouses. As the iostudio-built suite of Hiring Our Heroes tools grew, so did the need for a single point of access. Enter My HOH Dashboard.
My HOH Dashboard is an online environment where veterans, military spouses, and employers can access all the employment tools and resources that Hiring Our Heroes offers. In the dashboard, job seekers can find hiring events, browse fast-growing industries, use resume-building tools, connect with recruiters, and more. Employers can search resumes, reach out to potential hires, and learn how to hire and retain veterans.
Impact
In just the first six weeks, the Resume Engine received more than 30,000 unique visitors. Currently, more than 200,000 veterans and military spouses use Resume Engine and the other tools housed in My HOH Dashboard. What’s more, 80% of virtual hiring fair attendees advance to the next step with employers. Since the launch of My HOH Dashboard, our deep familiarity with the military audience and our extensive digital experience has helped create a clear path to employment for thousands of veterans and military spouses.
